Intro to project: Understanding Stress Summary:
"Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upsets your balance in some way" - Help Guide.org This website explains how stress is the body's way of responding and protecting you and when working properly it is actually good for you. Stress in a positive light keeps you focused, energetic, and alert. A little amount of stress is what can also motivate you to do well on an exam. Beyond certain points though, stress can cause damage to your health, productivity, relationships, mood, and overall well being. When you stress your nervous system responds by releasing tons of stress hormones. This includes adrenaline and cortisol. Hormones are what gets the body ready for action.
Opinion:
I agree with the information that I found on this website which was basically informing the reader about what stress is. Even with a previous knowledge of stress and having stressed many times before in my life, this website was easy to understand and relate to as well.

A. Editorial Article Summary:
Stress is defined as strain or deform of the body. It is caused from tests, family problems, job loss, etc. Among college students the main causes are relationships, peer pressure, and school related issues. One main cause of stress in any environment is adapting to new life since students are used to the protection of their parents. Common cause of stress is uncertainty and lack of identity and this can be caused by doing badly and not living up to ones standards. Big cause of stress for students is peer pressure because they are usually persuaded into doing things you don't normally do. This is also because students are afraid of being rejected. Students stress mainly from trying to balance the academic and aspects of school.
Opinion:
After reading this editorial article I felt more knowledgeable about stress. This article helped me to realize that everyone (especially students) stress and that it is normal. I found it interesting to learn that one of the main causes or simulators of stress was from the environment around you. It was easy to relate to this article one because it was written by a college student and two, because it reinforced the reasons why I become stressed in my own life.
B. NY Times Magazine Summary:
Long school days and over crowded classrooms is what causes students to stress. A survey of 1,206 children ranging from 8 to 17 was taken to measure the causes of stress in their lives. 1/3 reported feeling more stressed than a year ago and half of them were also worried about school. They were worried about overcoming high school and getting into college. This type of stress is making children sick, more so than parents in some cases. This survey said that most students learn to stress from their parents. About 94% of the students reported feeling overwhelmed by all they have to do in school. Some of the causes were work load, social issues, roommates, dating, activities. These all triggered stress as well as depression. As a result many students suffered from a lack of sleep as well.
Opinion:
Even though I have gone through high school and now I am about half way through college, some of the causes of stress that were in this magazine, I did not realize where reasons why I was stressing out. I learned in this magazine article that a big part as to why students stress begins within the school itself. The causes of stress have to do with things such as class size and long school days. This totally made 100% sense to me because I would always dislike being in a small classroom with a large number of students for many reasons. Though I never realized those things I disliked were actually causing me to stress.
C. Scholarly Article/ Journal Summary:
The Student Stress Survey is used to determine the stress of a student. School, age, gender, majors/classes are all simulators of stress. Freshmen are a group in particular who are prone to stress. This is because they are transitioning into a new environment and must learn to adjust to their surroundings. The amount of stress is influenced by a persons ability to cope with the event. The cause of stress differs between people, though wanting to do well in school is a common cause of stress amongst students. Others are excessive homework, unclear assignments, and uncomfortable classrooms. Certain things cause students to stress out more than others, it all depends on the person.
Opinion:
In this scholarly article I found it interesting that there are actual tests and surveys that are set up to study a students stress. I always figured that they type of person regarding school, age, gender, etc definitely mattered and would determine a person's stress level. I definitely experienced the stress of moving and transitioning into an new environment many times throughout my school years. The main times I experienced this was from elementary to middle school, from middle to high school, and from high school to college. I feel that those times of transition are also commonly felt by the majority of students. Also it was interesting to read that one the major causes of stress among students is wanting to do well and live up to their personal goals and I am definitely guilty of that.
D. Summary- ERIC Summary:
All people don't experience the same negative thoughts and feelings when stressed. Events that cause a student to stress are usually challenging and threatening. Change from middle school to high school and leaving home fore college are major causes of stress among students. Another cause among students is uncertainty and the lack of time management skills.
Opinion:
This summary reinforced my knowledge that people (specifically students) don't always experience the same negative thoughts and feelings as a result of stress. In this case I feel that I am a good candidate for this theory because though I may stress a lot about things in life, mainly school related, I do not resort to negative forms of coping with stress. Instead I find healthy ways to deal with stress, such as going for a run, talking to someone, or just convincing myself that I have done my very best and there is noting more that I can do.
E. Your Choice Article Summary:
The homework load for the majority of students of all ages has double in recent years, though this is only for the younger grades. In the grades in high school and college, the amount of homework has not increased at all. Some parents say the added pressure is taking away form the needed playing and family time and can cause stress, sleep deprivation, depression and family strife. As a result some schools are "downplaying" some things such as homework, academic honor roll, and programs that tend to cause the majority of students stress. Although the students in the United States are spending less time in school and working on homework than other schools in the world.
Opinion:
I found this article very interesting even though most of its pertained to younger students. The more I read in this article the more the theme of "playing the game of school" kept popping into my head. It seems like these schools (high school and higher) are giving less homework and trying to shy away from demanding academic groups or criteria but in the end this will not benefit the student.
